In Saugandh, Kumar made his debut as a lead actor alongside Raakhee and Shantipriya (1991). In the same year, he appeared in Kishore Vyas’s Dancer, which received mixed reviews. The following year, he starred in Khiladi, a suspense thriller directed by Abbas Mustan that was widely regarded as his breakthrough role.

According to The Indian Express, the film is “an engrossing thriller,” and Kumar is impressive in the lead role, noting his physical appearance, powerful screen presence, and also being “perfectly at ease.” Mr. Bond, based on James Bond, was his next release, directed by Raj Sippy. Deedar was his final 1992 release. It did not fare well at the box office.

He co-starred with Dr. Vishnuvardhan and Ashwini Bhave in the Keshu Ramsay-directed bilingual movie Ashaant in 1993. All of his 1993 movies, including Dil Ki Baazi, Kayda Kanoon, Waqt Hamara Hai, and Sainik, did poorly commercially. He showed up in 11 feature films in 1994.

He played a police inspector in two movies, both of which were box office successes: Sameer Malkan’s Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Rajiv Rai’s Mohra. Later that year, he played the lead opposite Kajol in the Yash Chopra-produced romance Yeh Dillagi. Both the film and his acting skills were well received by critics, with The Indian Express explaining him as “always dependable” and singling out his performance as one of the year’s greatest mainline successes.

Kumar found success with what became known as the Khiladi series. He appeared in Umesh Mehra’s fourth and fifth action drama films with the subject line Khiladi: Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995) and Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), both of which were commercial successes. He played a double role in the first. Rekha and Raveena Tandon co-starred in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi.

Kumar received his first Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award nomination for his role in the Yash Chopra-directed romance Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Karisma Kapoor.

Kumar’s most successful year in the industry was 2007, and box office analysts described it as “probably the best ever recorded by an actor, with four outright hits and no flops.”

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was released in 2017. The serious social issue of toilets in certain regions of the country was depicted in this film. The performance of Akshay was praised. To promote the film, Akshay Kumar dug a toilet in Madhya Pradesh.

Akshay appeared in another social drama film, Pad Man, with Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte in 2018. Later, he made his Tamil film debut in the sci-fi thriller 2.0, a standalone sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2010 film Enthiran, in which he performed an evil ornithologist called Pakshirajan.

Kumar appeared in Karan Johar’s film Kesari, based on the Battle of Saragarhi, opposite Parineeti Chopra in 2019. The film earned more than 2 billion (US$28.4 million) worldwide.

Kumar’s first film, Bachchan Pandey, was released in 2022, and he did play the titular character of a gangster, a nickname from Kumar’s character in the 2008 film Tashan. Despite an amazing cast and fan excitement, Bachchhan Pandey received a negative critical response and failed at the box office.

His 2022 next film was Samrat Prithviraj, a period drama based on the story of Hindu warrior Prithviraj Chauhan. Sonu Sood, Sanjay Dutt, and Manushi Chhillar also appeared. The film was released in theatres on June 3, 2022, to mixed reactions. The film, which was made on a 300 crore budget, underperformed at the box office.

Kumar has also performed stunts. Kumar debuted the TV reality show Dare 2 Dance in 2014. He owns the World Kabaddi League team Khalsa Warriors. Kumar was the only Bollywood actor on the Forbes list of the world’s highest-earning entertainers in 2015 and 2019, ranking 52nd with earnings of $48.5 million.

He is the first Hindi movie actor whose domestic net lifetime collections surpassed 20 billion rupees (US$341.31 million) in 2013, and 30 billion rupees (US$446.46 million) in 2016. Forbes named him the highest-paid Bollywood actor in 2020. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Windsor in 2008, as well as the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civil award (2009)
