Ashura Day 2022: Date, History, Significance & More

The word ‘Ashura’ is derived from the Arabic word ‘tenth,’ and the day of Ashura falls on the tenth day of the month of Muharram. The month of Muharram is very important to Shia Muslims because it commemorates the death anniversary of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Husayn Ibn Ali al-Hussein, who died on the 10th day of the Battle of Karbala, which is known as Ashura.

On the day of Ashura, Shia Muslims around the world mourn the death of Husayn Ibn Ali al-Hussein, also known as Imam Hussain, and participate in a remembrance parade called ‘Matam’ in his honour.

Ashura History

The Battle of Karbala actually occurred in the 61st year of the Islamic calendar, between a small group of supporters and relatives of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Imam Hussain and the military of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph.

Imam Hussain’s army consisted of his friends, relatives, women, and young children, and the enemies’ humongous army captured Hussain and his group and denied them food and water for three days in the scorching desert heat. Soldiers brutally murdered Hussain and his 6-year-old son and kidnapped the women.

The day is observed to remember the sacrifice of innocent lives during the month of Muharram by observing a mourning period.

Significance Of Asura

The second holiest month for Muslims worldwide is Muharram, and on the day of Ashura, Shia Muslims from all over the world mourn the demise of Imam Hussain.

Shia Muslims dress in black on this day, march down the street, fast, and honour Imam Hussain by beating themselves with chains and cutting themselves with knives and blades. They do it as a means of showing their sadness at Imam Hussain’s death.

As the Prophet Muhammad wished for his followers to fast for two days on Ashura and the day before. While Sunni Muslims observe a fast in honour of Muhammad, Shia Muslims mourn the passing of Imam Hussain on Ashura.
