Two days after Deepawali, Bhai Dooj is observed as a festival. Bhai Dooj will be celebrated this year on Wednesday, October 27, 2022. Other names for Bhai Dooj are Bhaiya duj, Bhai Bij, and Bhatri Dwitiya.

Every year, on the second day of Kartik Shukla Paksha, Bhai Dooj is observed. On this day, sisters apply tilak to their brothers’ foreheads and perform other rituals such as vrat, puja, and katha to wish them a long life and prosperity.

In exchange, brothers present gifts and promise to always look out for their sisters. On the day of Bhai Dooj, it is thought that you must perform worship as well as listen to and read the Vrat Katha.

The sisters wish their brothers a long life on this day. The festival of Bhai Dooj is a celebration of the sister’s enduring love and adoration for her brother.

Bhai Dooj History

The myth suggests that Yama and Yamuna were related as a brother and sister. In spite of numerous invitations from her sister Yamuna and offers of food, Yama did not visit Yamuna’s home for many years.

On the other hand, Yamraj visited his sister Yamuna on the second day of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month. Yamuna’s sister was overjoyed to see her brother Yama and was overjoyed to greet him. She was happy to give him food. Sister Yamuna was welcomed with such warmth by brother Yama, who instructed the sister to request a boon.

Then, sister Yamuna requested a blessing from her brother, promising that, on this day every year, the sisters who return home and place tika on their brothers’ foreheads and treat them with respect will never be terrified of Yama.

Brother Yama made it worthwhile by saying “Tathastu” after hearing his sister’s blessing. Since then, this custom has persisted. On this day, sisters still apply tika to their brothers and offer them gifts like clothes and candy. The brothers also show their sisters their love and affection by giving them gifts at the same time. On this day, people pay special homage to Yama and Yamuna.

How is Bhai Dooj Celebrated?

Rakhi and Bhai Dooj is a similar festival. After taking a bath, the sisters get dressed when they wake up in the morning. They then begin cooking for her brother after that.

Sisters apply tilak to their brother’s forehead during the rite and offer prayers for their long, healthy lives. The brother is then forced to consume paan after they perform aarti.
