The movie’s release date was revealed by Apple TV along with a 2-minute trailer. The movie, which is based on the true account of Gordon or Whipped Peter, a fugitive slave, depicts the tale of his escape from a Louisiana plantation and reunion with his family after being nearly killed by cruel hunters who outwitted him.

In 1863, a photo showing his naked back with severe scourging from an overseer’s whipping was widely disseminated, providing the abolitionist movement or Abolitionism with evidence of the brutality of American slavery.

Will Smith, a household name in Hollywood, plays Peter in the title role of the movie. He last appeared in the biographical sports movie King Richard from 2021, which stars Will Smith as Richard Williams, the father and coach of Venus and Serena Williams, two renowned tennis players.

The movie received numerous nominations for prominent accolades such as the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and Screen Actor Guild Awards. Smith was recognised as the Best Actor at each of the three award ceremonies.

Emancipation Movie Release Date

On October 1, 2022, the movie that Toddy Black, Joey McFarland, Jone Moon, and Smith executive produced debuted in Washington, D.C. It will now debut on Apple TV+ on December 9, 2022, following a limited theatrical run on December 2, 2022.

Apple decided to postpone the movie from its original 2022 release date to 2023 after Smith faced backlash for slapping Hollywood comic Chris Rock onstage at the Academy Awards. Smith’s first motion picture following the Oscar slap incident.
