Every year on September 15th, National Engineer’s Day is observed to commemorate Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya’s birth anniversary. Engineer’s Day is observed to honour Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.

Engineers are experts who create and innovate the machines, technologies, structures, and digital systems we use today. Engineers have invented and designed machines that dramatically improve our world by using basic scientific and mathematical notions.

Karnataka was the birthplace of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He received his postgraduate degree in arts from the University of Mysore. He then studied engineering at Pune’s College of Science.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, commonly known as the “Father of Modern Mysore,” was born in the city of Mysore. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya worked on challenging projects and rose to become one of India’s most distinguished engineers. He was sent to Yemen by the Indian government to evaluate drainage and water delivery systems.

Sir Visvesvaraya devised and built mechanical floodgates that were put at Pune’s Khadakwasla reservoir. After a while, these floodgates were also erected at the Krishnaraja Sagara Dam in Mysuru and the Tigra Dam in Gwalior, where he worked as a chief engineer.

Sir Mokshagundam constructed flood protection schemes as well as advanced sewage schemes in 1908. He is also well known for his contributions to the development of block systems to reduce water waste in dams. Mokshagundam was also responsible for the route that connects Tirumala and Tirupati. From 1912 to 1919, he was also the 19th Diwan of Mysore.

For his civic service, he was named a “Knight Commander” by the British Indian Empire. In 1917, Mokshagundam also established the Government Engineering College in Bengaluru. The university is called the college the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.
