Halloween-History, Quotes, Wishes and More

Halloween also known as Allhalloween that is observed each year on October 31st in most western countries. It marks the eve of All Hallows Day, a Christian feast commemorating all saints.

According to historians, Halloween or Hallowe’en (a contraction for “All Hallows’ night”) is rooted in an ancient Celtic festival when people lit bonfires and donned costumes to keep away ghosts.

As such, Halloween continues to be celebrated with costumes being worn, people sharing “trick-or-treat” and carving jack-o’lanterns.

Celts, who lived around 2,000 years ago in the area now known as northern France, Britain, and Ireland, believed that the boundary night that separates summer from winter is where the boundaries between the worlds between the living and dead blurred.

They believed that the spirits of the dead returned to the world on October 31st. This date became convenient for the festival because the Celts celebrated the new year on November 1.

According to one theory, Halloween’s origins lie in the Celtic festival Samhain. This marked the end of a bountiful summer harvest and the start of the “dark and cold winter”. At that time, death and decay were associated with Halloween.

The Celts celebrated Samhain on the night that marked the transition between summer and winter. They lit huge bonfires in honor of their deities and prayed for protection from evil spirits in the coming winter.

Some believe this Samhain tradition with pagan roots was Christianized as All Hallow’s Day. Other academics think that it originated as a Christian holiday.

It evolved into a secular celebration in many western countries, where people celebrate the old tradition against spirits.
