Hariyali Teej is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, also known as “Teej Mata.” According to Hindu Scriptures, this was the day Lord Shiva accepted Goddess Parvati as his wife. Goddess Parvati had to fast and be austere for several years before Lord Shiva accepted her during her 108th birth.

Hariyali Teej Significance

Haryali Teej is very important to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati devotees. On this day, married women fast and pray to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for a happy and prosperous marriage. The women also dress in green cloured sarees, green bangles, and Heena (Mehndi) designs on their hands.

To celebrate this festival, women form groups and sing traditional Teej songs while swinging. Women offer fruits, flowers, Bailpatri, and turmeric-coated rice to the Goddess Parvati in exchange for their husband’s long life.
