Hindi Day (Hindi Diwas) 2022 History, Quotes, Wishes and More

Hindi Day, or Hind Diwas, is observed to honour and promote the Hindi language and to inspire people—particularly children—to use it more frequently.

The language is spoken by a sizable population all over the world. According to estimates, approximately 42 crore people worldwide speak Hindi as their first language, and another 12 crore speak it as a second.

Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Dellhi, and West Bengal are the Indian states that have Hindi as their official or supplementary official language.

How Hindi Diwas Celebrated

Numerous cultural celebrations are held nationwide to honour Hindi literature on the occasion of Hindi Diwas. For their contributions to the Hindi language, nationalised banks, public sector organisations, ministries, departments, and individuals have received prizes including the Rajbhasha Kirti Puruskar and Rajbhasha Gaurav Puruskar.

Hindi Diwas History

The Constituent Assembly of India recognized and designated Hindi, an Indo-Aryan language written in the Devanagari script, as the nation’s official language in 1949, two years after India gained independence from British rule. It is one of the 22 official languages of the Indian Republic.

Since 1949, when the then-prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru made the decision to observe Hindi Diwas on September 14 each year, it has been a national holiday in India. (This is not to be confused with World Hindi Day, which is also observed on January 10 each year for the same reason.)
