Indian Air Force Day History

Every year on October 8, Indian Air Unit Day is observed in remembrance of the day in 1932 when the Indian Air Force was formally established as the UK’s Royal Air Force’s supporting force. The first operational squadron was introduced in April 1933.

After India’s participation in World War II in the middle of the 1940s, the air force of India adopted the name Royal Indian Air Force. After Republic in 1950, the name Indian Air Force was adopted. The Air Force was founded in 1933 with just six officers and 19 Hawai’ian Sepoys, and it is now the fourth largest military in the world.

With the involvement of several IAF veterans and “Bada Khana” for the officers of the units present at the station, the event highlights the numerous functions.

Up to 2005–2006, Air Force Day was observed in Palam for a number of years. However, due to the increasing air traffic problems, it was moved to Hindon Air Force Base in Ghaziabad, which includes two transport aircraft squadrons and a helicopter unit.

Indian Air Force Day Significance

The air wing of the Indian Armed Forces is known as the Indian Air Force (IAF). Its officer and aircraft complement places it fourth among all aviation academies worldwide. Its primary duties include overseeing ethereal combat during armed conflict and maintaining the security of Indian skies.

Indian Air Force Day 2022 Theme

The 2022 Indian Air Force Day has not yet been given a theme. The theme for the prior year (2021) was “Touch the Sky with Glory.” The staff’s “unwavering efforts and heroic sacrifices” in 2020.

The theme for the year 2019 was “Know your Air Force.” Commando forces like the “Garud,” ambassadors, IAF helicopters, skydiving teams, special operations teams, combat units, missile systems, and radar structures were all on show at the event.

In contrast to 2017, when Indian aerobatic teams Sarang and Surya Kiran performed alongside Scandinavian air show teams, numerous aircraft, including the Tejas LCA, Jaguar, and other fighter pilots, flew in 2018. The “Dance of Daredevils” performance was the highlight of the show.

How Indian Air Force Day Celebrated

A parade of airmen was one of the event’s high points at Hindon Air Force Base. Additionally, it performs an investiture role in which the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) awards medals to the military personnel.

Along with being broadcast, the event is regularly attended by a sizable number of active duty and retired airmen as well as their relatives and locals. Due to COVID restrictions put in place, there will be much fewer participants this year. The day’s activities also typically include a “at home” meeting that is organised by the CAS.

A spectacular air show and parade will be present at Indian Air Force Day in 2021. The Air Force has published four images from the Air Force Day parade rehearsal in Ghaziabad. Over Wazirpur Bridge, Karwalnagar, Afjalpur, Hindan, Shamli, Jiwana, Chandinagar, Hapur, Philkua, and Ghaziabad will be where the 89th Air Force Day display will take place. The IAF has asked everyone in the region to refrain from throwing food or trash outside because doing so would attract local birds, which could be hazardous for aviators.
