Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed on July 26 every year. India successfully ended the Kargil War on this day, regaining control of the higher outposts.
When Pakistan gained control of the outposts and consciously violated the bilateral agreement signed between the two countries, the war began. The 60-day Kargil War came to an end on July 26, 1999, when India responded by taking possession of what was rightly hers.
We continue to honor the warriors who gave their lifes in service to the country 23 years later.
Every year, the Prime Minister of India pays tribute to the soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate on Kargil Vijay Diwas in the nation’s capital of New Delhi. Additionally, celebrations honoring the contributions of the Indian Armed Forces are held in each state.
How start Kargil War
Following the Indo-Pakistani War in 1971, armed conflict between the two countries was infrequent. However, they made every effort to control the Siachen Glacier by erecting military outposts on neighboring slopes, which led to clashes between the two armies in the 1990s.
After both nations conducted nuclear tests in 1998 when things were getting out of hand, the Lahore Declaration was signed in February 1999 to offer a diplomatic solution.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani Army was carrying out a covert operation to cross the LOC into Indian territory with the intention of cutting off the connection between Ladakh and Kashmir.
Their other objective was to compel the Indian troops to leave the Siachen Glacier. The Indian government swiftly reacted after hearing of their plan and wasted no time in mobilizing nearly 200,000 Indian troops in that area. OpVijay was the code name for this counterattack mission.
Due to their superior positioning at higher elevations, the Pakistani Army had an early lead over their Indian counterparts in terms of shooting. Two Indian fighter jets were brought down by them, and one crashed. When then-US President Bill Clinton ordered Pakistan to move its soldiers from the Line of Control (LOC) during the conflict.
The Indian Army attacked the remaining Pakistani outposts and captured the peaks while Pakistan was occupied with its departure. They successfully finished the operation on July 26. 700 deaths were reported in the Pakistani camps, compared to 527 deaths overall among Indian armed soldiers.
Pakistan denied being involved in the conflict after India won the battle. They ascribed responsibility to the Kashmiri separatists. However, they were afterward spotted awarding medals to their fighting soldiers.
