On 29 August, India celebrates National Sports Day. This day is observed to honour sports figures who have made significant contributions to the field of sports. This day is also commemorated as the birthday of iconic hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
History Of National Sports Day
This day is dedicated to Major Dhyan Chand Singh. He was a hockey player who won three gold medals in India’s Olympics in 1928, 1932, and 1936. According to his autobiography, “Goals”, he scored 570 goals during his career (1926-1949).
He has been a pioneer in international hockey and helped his country reach its highest points of glory many times. He was a legend in Indian and international hockey. His most enduring memorials were the Major Dhyan Chand Award, which is the highest award for lifetime achievement and Indian sports and games, and the National Sports Day celebrations. Major Dhyan Chaud learned hockey from Pankaj Gupta, his coach. He is the only person who can play hockey at his level. On 29 August 1905, Major Dhyan Chand will have his birthday.
The Main Aim Of National Sports Day
The primary goal of National Sports Day is to raise awareness about the value of mental and physical fitness also encourage people to play sports.. On this day, cities and states hold various sports activities and competitions.
In 2018, India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, launched the Khelo India campaign to encourage the spirit of sports among Indian citizens.
On National Sports Day, the Indian President bestows several major awards in the area of sports, including the Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards, Dronacharya Awards, and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, on athletes for their lifetime contributions in their respective fields.
