Each year Unity day is celebrated on the 31st of October in honor of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Sardar Vallabhbhai who was India’s first Home Minister was instrumental in persuading many princely states in India to become part of the Union of India.

In order to resist British rule, Vallabhbhai Patel was a member of India’s freedom struggle. His views led to the bringing of India together and helped build an independent India.

His work towards national integration earned him an honorary title “The Iron Man of India”. In recognition of his work, The government declared the month of the 31st of October the day of his birthday to be Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day in 2014.

The government has hosted events and programs each the 31st of October since 2014 in honor of Vallabhbhai Patel’s contribution.

The Home Ministry declared its birth anniversary National Unity Day 2014 and declared that it will be a time to reflect on the strength of our nation and celebrate the nation’s determination to withstand threats to security as well as unity and integrity.

The Statue of Unity is an iconic symbol of India’s unification and is situated in pride on the bank of the Narmada River in Vadodara (Gujarat). In the year 2018, the statue was inaugurated. This year, we will celebrate Vallabhbhai’s birthday on his 146th birth anniversary in 2019.
