Metaverse is suddenly a hot topic despite the fact that it has been around for almost three decades.

The answer to What is Metaverse? isn’t easy. It is not possible to know what the metaverse will look like in the future, as there is currently no such thing.

The Metaverse” is a large-scale, interoperable network of 3D virtual realms that can be experienced synchronously, persistently, by an effectively unlimited amount of users with an individual feeling of presence and continuity of data such as identity and history, entitlements, and objects. Matthew Ball, the venture capitalist, describes it in the preface of his nine-part essay on metaverse, The Metaverse Primer

He calls the metaverse a “quasi–successor state for the mobile internet” and writes that “the Metaverse won’t fundamentally replace or transform the internet but will instead build on it and iteratively transform.”

Metaverse is always evolving, so it’s possible that it will become a reality sooner than what is currently being imagined.

Starting of the Metaverse:-

The term “metaverse” is a combination of the words “meta” and “verse”. “Meta” is a Greek-origin prefix meaning “beyond”, while “verse” is from the Greek word “universe”.

In 1992’s dystopian novel Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson first used the metaverse in literature. The metaverse is described as the ultimate evolution and manifestation of the internet. It’s a type of virtual reality in which any interaction can have an immediate impact on the real world.

The book sums up the essence of the metaverse. It is a virtual world that exists in a persistent physical space. There are digital social interactions, gaming, and virtual avatars. These are just a few of the many things we associate with the metaverse. Snow Crash demonstrates how the metaverse affects the protagonist’s real world. It also highlights a conspiracy that makes people insane, whose brains are connected with the virtual world.

Many other books, films, and television shows have explored the concept since the publication of the book. Steven Spielberg’s highly-acclaimed movie Ready Player One (2018) was inspired by Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel.

All of these things have one common thread: The metaverse is a virtual world where people can do all the same things they do in real life, depending on how advanced the era is.

The Facebook idea for Metaverse:-

Facebook announced on 28 October 2021 that it had rebranded itself to Meta Platforms Inc. or Meta, a name it carefully chose to capitalize early on the inevitable future human connectivity and perhaps even life itself.

“The metaverse’s defining characteristic will be the feeling of being present. It will feel like you are there with another person or somewhere else. Social technology is built on the idea of being truly present with others. “That is why we are focused on building this,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in his Founder’s letter following the announcement.

Zuckerberg took it one step further and gave millions of people around the globe a glimpse into the metaverse in a 77-minute video.

Zuckerberg created a world that could be described as augmented reality and virtual reality (VR). Everything that people do in the real world can be replicated in the virtual space of the metaverse.

VR headsets and other wearable devices designed for this purpose will be used as gateways to the virtual world.

Facebook’s metaverse concept includes virtual avatars that are able to exercise, study, and have meetings.

This idea can lead to a larger, more expansive metaverse. Zuckerberg is adamant that it will take approximately 10 years for the metaverse’s mainstream acceptance. It’s not a long time, though.

Microsoft Metaverse:-

Microsoft is yet another big tech player looking to create a metaverse. Mesh is its idea. Its most intriguing feature is “Holoportation”, which the company calls it. It will allow users to project their holographic selves onto other users.

HoloLens is a unique device that allows you to experience Holoportation in augmented and virtual reality. Mesh can be accessed using VR headsets, smartphones, tablets, or computers.

Initial projections will consist of animated avatars. It will eventually become a photorealistic, lifelike projection. It will be similar to how Star Wars characters interact with one another via hologram projection.

Mesh will be available for Teams by 2022. Microsoft is clearly focused on making routine work more immersive in a metaverse.

Other metaverse platforms

Roblox and Fortnite are two of the more advanced metaverse platforms. This is especially interesting.

Roblox was launched in 2006 and has been so popular that more than half of American children aged 16 or younger have played it by 2020. However, Roblox is much more than a game.

Imagine a fair with stalls that allow you to play games. Roblox functions as a fairground in the virtual world. Users can make their own games and then monetize them to earn real money. Robux is a virtual currency that users earn through the platform.

Venture Beat recently reported that Dan Sturman (chief of technology at Roblox) said that the company is creating a metaverse for its players at the GamesBeat Summit Next. This is because companies such as Nike, the National Football League (NFL), and Roblox have entered the metaverse with NIKE LAND, a virtual play space, and Roblox stores, respectively.

The NFL announced its partnership with Nike on 18 November. However, it came out ten days later.

Fortnite is, however, one of the most prominent ‘competitors” in the metaverse space. Epic Games launched Fortnite in 2017 as an online multiplayer game. It has since grown to be a bigger social media space, with well-known musicians performing on the platform, like Ariana Grande.

AR and VR

Oculus VR headsets have given the metaverse a huge boost. Already, games that are optimized for VR headsets have been making a lot of money. According to Fortune Business Insights, virtual reality gaming will grow to USD 53.44 Billion in 2028 from USD 7.92 Billion in 2021.

AR is an advanced form of AR. This is when the user’s perceptions of reality are enhanced by the use of technology. This is similar to obtaining more information about an object from the real world and viewing it through an AR headset or device.

This is best understood by revisiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe films featuring Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, aka our favorite Iron Man, displayed technology that is still beyond imagination. You can see him in the Iron Man suit, getting multiple visualizations from his heads-up display (HUD), of what he is seeing in reality. That is AR. These are movies, but they’re films. Iron Man enters realms of incredible tech that will take decades to become a reality.

The speed with which the real world is working to make VR/AR/metaverse a reality is amazing. Apple Inc. has already started to explore AR and claims to be the “world’s largest AR platform.” There are multiple AR apps available on the App Store that can be used for anything, from making Snapchat videos more entertaining to exploring AR 3D projects.

Nreal, an AR company from China, has created Nreal Light glasses. The glasses will be available for purchase starting in December 2021 in China, Japan, and South Korea. Consumer augmented reality glasses are also stylish and fashionable, making enhanced reality even more fun.

The future of the metaverse

It is likely that the metaverse will be as common and real as the internet. It is only a matter of time, as we can see.

When CNN asked Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games, what his thoughts were about the future metaverse, he replied that “It will take a decade or longer to get there, but I believe that it is happening.”

Sweeney also stated that “the metaverse isn’t going to be created solely by one company.” It will be created through millions of developers, each one building their own part.

In other words, the metaverse continues to be built brick by brick, and everyone will play a part in its creation.

We have already gaming Metaverse?

Many avid gamers have. One of the most popular games in the world, The Sims, was released in 2000. It allowed users to live a virtual version of their lives through avatars. The many sequels and spinoffs only added to the immersive experience of “living in virtual reality”.

The Sims provided a glimpse into what a future metaverse experience might look like. Second Life was launched by Linden Lab, an American technology company. Experts and fans both credit Second Life with technically planting the seeds for virtual reality.

Second Life lets its users experience what the name implies — a second existence. The platform allows users to create 3D avatars and almost do everything in the real world.

Second Life is a world in its own right. Users can interact with others and build relationships through their virtual identities. They can organize, attend, and express themselves through music, art, and use virtual objects in Second Life to build things such as virtual buildings. They can attend business meetings, religious seminars, and concerts.

There are also educational institutions as well as embassies. The first virtual embassy opened in Second Life was opened by the Maldives in 2007.

Second Life users can purchase and sell virtual goods using Linden Dollar, the platform’s closed-loop digital currency. This should not be confused with cryptocurrency.

Many games allow players to interact, such as the 2004 multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft. This is a type of social network that allows players to interact with each other.
