When and how did April Fools’ Day start?
There is no concrete proof of how the celebration of April Fool’s Day started, but some stories of its beginning are very popular.
A reference to April Fools’ Day appears in The Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer in 1392.
Whereas in the story The Nun’s Priest’s Tale, , written by the same poet, the cock Chanteclair is tricked by the sly fox 32 days after the start of March, which is April 1.
According to some historians, years ago people in Europe and France used to celebrate New Year on 25th March and this celebration lasted till 1st April, but later on 1st January the new year started being celebrated because of which people who celebrate New Year on January 1 started celebrating April Fool’s Day on April 1 to make fun of people who celebrate New Year on different dates.
Many stories are prevalent in Western countries about the beginning and reason for celebrating April Fool’s Day, but there is no concrete evidence as to when and why it was celebrated.
