Some beliefs of celebrating the Lohri festival are very popular, according to the first belief, during the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati, Daksha Prajapati had insulted Shiva.
Goddess Sati could not bear the insult of Lord Shiva by her father Daksha Prajapati and the Goddess sacrificed her life in the burning fire.
According to some beliefs, the fire of Lohri is lit in memory of the Yogagni-Dahan of Sati.
According to the second popular story, during the reign of Mughal ruler Akhbar in India, girls in Punjab and some other states were forcefully sold to rich people for slavery.
Dulla Bhati, a rebel of Gurjar lineage, did not like such atrocities towards girls and he protested and freed all the girls and got them married to Hindu boys.
By helping many girls, Dulla Bhati became the hero of all Punjabi communities, due to which Lohri is also associated with the story of Dulla Bhati.
