Onam is a major Hindu festival celebrated every year for 10 days in the state of Kerala in late August and early September.
According to the Hindu Panchangam, this festival falls every year on the 22nd nakshatra Thiruvonam of the month of Chingam, and in 2023, Onam will start from the 20th of August and will continue till the 31st of August.
Reason to Celebrate Onam Festival
According to Hindu Puranas, once upon a time, the demon king Mahabali reigned in Kerala, and seeing his popularity, prowess, and magnanimity, Lord Indra became very jealous.
To end the king’s rule as well as his popularity, Lord Indra sought help from Lord Vishnu, due to which Lord Vishnu took the form of a Vamana and came to King Mahabali to beg for alms.
Lord Vishnu knew that King Mahabali did not return empty-handed any monk who came to his place to ask for alms, for which he asked for 3 steps of land from the king as alms.
The king was unaware of the Vamana’s real form and happily agreed to give 3 steps of land but the Vamana measured the whole world in just 2 steps.
On being unable to fulfill Vaman’s alms, King Mahabali asked to keep the third step on his head and the Vamana sent the third step to the king’s head and sent him to Patala, But pleased with Mahabali’s charity, Lord Vishnu granted the king a boon to meet his kingdom and people once a year.
On the occasion of the return of Mahabali to the kingdom, the people of Kerala celebrate the Onam festival with great pomp.
How is the Onam festival celebrated in Kerala?
The celebration of this festival which lasts for 10 days begins at the Vamana temple (Temple of Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu located in Kelar).
People make Rangoli (Pookalam) of flowers in the courtyard of the houses, which keeps increasing by making a circle of flowers for 10 days and In the center of Pookalam, Vishnu’s Vamana avatar, King Bali and his bodyguards made of raw clay is consecrated.
During the festival of Onam, boat race is organized along with dance, which is very popular all over the world.
