Hariyali Teej 2023 Date, History, Wishes, Images & How To Celebrate

Every year in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar state of India, on the Tritiya of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month, on the day of Hasta Nakshatra, unmarried and married women celebrate Hartalika Teej with great devotion.

This festival is also known as Hartalika Vrat or Teeja, in which fasting is done to worship Lord Shiva and Parvati.

This year, Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on August 19, 2023, and the fast which is considered more difficult than Karwachauth will be observed to get desired groom and long life of a husband.

History & How To Celebrate

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are also known as “Teej Mata” because according to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Parvati did severe penance for many years in her different births to get Lord Shiva as her husband and Lord Shiva was pleased & accepted her as his wife during his 108th birth, which day is celebrated today as the festival of Hariyali Teej.

Haritalika Teej Vrat can be observed by any unmarried and married woman, but after fasting once, this fast has to be observed every year throughout life.

The green color is considered very auspicious in this fast. All the fasting women take a bath early in the morning and wear green sarees and green bangles and offer fruits, flowers, bel leaves, and turmeric-coated rice to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and pray for a happy and prosperous married life.

Like Karvachauth, on this day also beautiful Mahanadi is applied in the hands and all the women prepare swings by forming groups and performing bhajan kirtan and night vigil along with singing traditional Teej songs because sleeping at night is prohibited on this day.

It is considered very auspicious to donate clothes, food items, fruits, sweets, and such power ornaments in Hariyali Teej, and by reading or listening to the story of Shiva Parvati’s marriage, one gets the desired groom.

Drinking water is prohibited during this fast and water is consumed only while breaking the fast on the next day of Hartalika Teej.
