Magh Bihu is a major harvest festival celebrated every year in the month of January in the Indian state of Assam.
Magh Bihu is also known as Bhogali Bihu and Maghar Domahi and like every year in 2023 this festival will start on 14th January and last till 15th January.
How Magh Bihu celebrated
Many festivals are celebrated every year in different states of India and the way of celebrating them is also different in Kumaon of Uttarakhand state, the festival of harvesting is celebrated as Ghughuti and Makar Sankranti in South India.
Preparations to celebrate Magh Bihu start a few days before the festival and people make huts out of bamboo, leaves, and thatch these huts are also known as Meji and Bhelaghar.
In Bhelaghar, the family members prepare and eat many dishes and all the people of the nearby village together sing folk songs and perform traditional dance by burning fire.
People sleep in Bhelaghar on the first night of the Magh Bihu festival and it is burnt the next day.
During Magh Bihu, the Buffalo fight is organized in many districts of Assam, which is very popular all over the world.
